Dental Bridge provided by Dr. Carly Petersen
in Lake Oswego, OR at The Dentist on Boones Ferry
If you have lost or missing teeth, a dental bridge provides a possible solution. As the name insinuates, a dental bridge connects the gap created by the missing tooth. We fix the problem using one or more artificial teeth. The replacement tooth is supported by crowns on either side. The crowns ensure that your new tooth is secured in place. You should have healthy teeth on adjacent sides of the missing tooth in order for the bridge to work properly. Here at The Dentist on Boones Ferry, we install bridges to help bring back the function and look of your bite.
Who Needs a Dental Bridge?
You may need a dental bridge if you have one or more missing teeth. Tooth loss can be a result of decay, gum disease, or injury. We also offer bridges if you were born with missing teeth as a result of a congenital disorder. Missing a tooth affects your appearance and a dental bridge can help boost your confidence. A lost tooth also increases the risk of more dental issues. Nearby teeth may move to fill the space. Also, the space allows teeth in your opposing jaw to move up and down. As a result, you may experience pain. You may also be experiencing bite problems and difficulties when chewing.
Types of Dental Bridges
We offer four different types of bridges. First, you may need a traditional fixed bridge. It is the most common bridge. They are made of metal, ceramics, or porcelain-fused-to-metal. The crowns and the filler teeth are all joined. The crown holds the bridge in place to avoid movement. On the downside, we have to modify adjacent teeth before installation.
Secondly, you may be a candidate for a cantilever dental bridge. Here, we use one tooth to anchor the filler tooth. It is most suitable if you are replacing a tooth at the front of your mouth. However, it is not suitable for fillers at the back of the mouth. You would be putting too much stress on the anchoring tooth.
The structure of a Maryland bonded bridge is similar to that of a traditional dental bridge. However, we use metal or porcelain as anchors. Maryland bonded bridges are also more affordable compared to traditional bridges. However, the metal frameworks can lead to discoloration, affecting your appearance.
Lastly, we have implant-supported bridges. We use them to fill large gaps if you have lost multiple teeth. They are stronger and more durable. Additionally, they have a longer recovery period.
Dental Bridge Procedure
Our dentist will first assess your mouth to rule out tooth decay or gum disease. We will then take measurements of the teeth and mouth, using specialized equipment. We will use the measurement to make a bridge. You will get a temporary bridge as you wait for the permanent one. We will attach your permanent bridge to healthy teeth. We can also surgically place them in the jaw.
Aftercare for Dental Bridges
After installation, you are required to look after your teeth and gums. You should brush twice daily and floss once per day. You should also visit us regularly for professional cleanings. We also encourage you to eat a balanced diet with limited chewy foods.
